A new study by Edison Research revealed how we use social networks in our daily life.

The study commissioned by Edison Research was conducted in Feburary 2010. 1’753 people were interviewed. Here’s a short summary of the study you can download here [pdf].

  • 48% have a personal profile on a social networking service
  • 30% use networking services several times a day
  • 39 million American access social networking services several times a day
  • 57% are women, and the most popular age group (25%) is between 18 and 25
  • 25% of the frequent social networkers are students
  • 87% have a profile on Facebook
  • 35% update their status several times a day, 16% update their status via mobile phone
  • 25% of frequent social networkers follow a brand
  • 50% of frequent social networkers own an iPod
  • 73% of frequent social networkers also write text messages several times a day
  • a frequent social networker spends 3:52 on the Internet and 2:50 watching TV, while the total population spends 1:56 on the Internet and 3:25 watching TV
  • 47% of frequent social networkers watch series on the Internet via streaming
  • 46% of frequent social networkers watch hulu and 67% use YouTube

Frequent social networkers are all-in-all more likely to be familiar with digital products such as podcasting, digital radio and purchase via Internet (which is kind of apparent).

As Tom Webster – VP, Strategy and Marketing at Edison claims:

” With both usage of social networks and the frequency of that usage increasing dramatically, we are truly witnessing a sea change in how mainstream consumers communicate”.
